After 7 years featuring over 100 local artists, we know first hand that Pittsburgh is a vibrant hub for artists of all kinds. But what is it about this city of bridges and steel that delights creative souls?
We've gathered the responses from our Maker We Love posts and compiled the answers to the question "In three words, what do you love about Pittsburgh."
Here's what the artists and makers who call Pittsburgh home have to say:
Strong Community
All together now! Mentioned in almost every excerpt, the most common theme artists share is the strong sense of community, as noted by EmTree as a "vibrant, diverse community."
We're lucky to have felt the kindness of our artists in many ways. They are willing to help one another and share their knowledge with peers. Artists feel supported and connected in this tight-knit community, which fosters collaboration and cheerleading for one's fellow artists.
Yinzer Culture
Many artists speak in Pittsburghese, so we cannot overlook our Yinzer Culture as a source of pride. Plus, passion for sports teams are part of this recurring theme, highlighting the city's vibrant energy for backing its "Black and Gold" like Michelle of Black and Gold Beef Jerky.
Grit
Resilience and work ethic are noted as core values our artists share, with terms like resilient, hardworking, and "can do attitude" being mentioned by Noramade.
Many feel Pittsburgh is full of ingenuity, as well as opportunities to achieve and start a business. What artist wouldn't find inspiration in a city chock full of determination and fortitude.
Hills and Rivers
Rolling hills, lush parks, and three rivers provide a picturesque backdrop for artistic inspiration. Many share affection for "parks," "rivers," "hills," and "bridges."
The juxtaposition of city and nature is described as a "beautiful urban forest" by Tree Pittsburgh.
Our varied topography, with its "crooked haunted hills" and "public steps," contributes to its loveable character.
A Love Affair
It's clear, the overall impression from our artists is one of deep affection for Pittsburgh. It's a city that fills your heart, inspiring artists to create, connect, and thrive.

Pittsburgh has always been a source of inspiration and pride to me. Being born here, (Lawrenceville), going to art school and working Downtown for 37 years, it became ingrained in me. Pittsburgh is part of my art, photography and my soul.
