We showcase fantastic local makers in each of our stores and want to give a behind the scenes look at their brands. Check back weekly for a new Makers We Love post to learn about the local brands that are growing right here in Pittsburgh. We’re starting out with Sally Leovner, of Small Shine Designs.
Tell us about yourself and your brand:
I'm Sally Leovner and the maker behind Small Shine Designs. My brand is a one-woman/two-cat show based out of Pittsburgh, Pa. Small Shine Designs features handmade metal jewelry. Pieces are balanced and unique and perfect for everyday wear, featuring textured and mixed-metal elements and a variety of stones.
Why did you start your brand?
I have always loved working with kids and went to school for Elementary Education. Having an academic schedule has allowed me the time to pursue my other interests, metalsmithing being one of them. After taking a class at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, my lovely boyfriend surprised me with the tools I needed to begin my home studio. Since then metalsmithing has taken over every bit of my free time, and I love it!
What's one product that you want our customers to know about?
The Silver and Copper Kitty Pair Necklace is inspired by my ridiculously cute cats, Millie and Phillip. This necklace is for all the proud cat parents out there!
Tell us why you love Pittsburgh:
Family, friends, and the normalcy of French fries on salad.
What does the future hold for your brand?
I am hoping to grow and teach jewelry making classes and workshops to kids and adults in the near future!
