Tell us about your brand and why it’s the best

If you're looking for colorful and functional boutique-quality baby gifts, you came to the right place! Lots of attention and care go into everything I do for my small business - from making to packaging and everything in between. I take my time and really enjoy the process. I love to connect with my customers and I'm always excited to do custom orders to create something uniquely special for them. It's also important to me that my products are handmade from high quality, imaginative fabrics, many of which are 100% premium organic cotton. My hope is that my attention to detail and quality craftsmanship show through in each of my products.

What is your background and the story behind why you started Waku Waku Baby?

I am so blessed that my main role right now is to be a mama to my two boys and Sheltie pup. Prior to being a mom, I worked as a chemist for a few years after completing my graduate studies in chemistry. Even though my background has always been in the sciences, I've always wanted to pursue my artistic, creative aspirations, and wanted to finally make that happen in some way while I took a break from the corporate world.

In 2018, I discovered my love for sewing colorful, functional baby items when I began making bibs for my son, out of pure necessity at first since he was quite a drooler. Making baby and toddler accessories has since then become an amazing creative outlet for me. In 2019, I was inspired to launch my little shop so that I can continue to share my passion with families in Pittsburgh and beyond (and also fulfill that artsy aspiration of mine)!

Waku waku means (to be) happy and excited in Japanese. I wanted my shop name to reflect my Japanese roots and the feeling I get when I sew new baby items! My hope is that my customers also feel "waku waku" upon receiving handmade items from my shop for their little ones!

What one product do we need to know about and why?

My one-of-a-kind homestead loveys are popular baby gifts! This homestead lovey collection is designed to comfort and entertain babies with imaginative farm-themed designs and minimalist presentation of the handmade fabric ribbons. A farm-themed image accompanies each number 1 through 9. You can pick out the lovey that speaks most to you - based on the design or a number that represents the baby's birth month or birth date. The front and fabric ribbons are made with 100% premium organic cotton and the reverse side is made with ivory 100% polyester minky fabric that is super soft and fun to touch. The inspiration to make these whimsical loveys came from a quilt I had made for my son's first birthday. I noticed how much he loved pointing out all the numbers and images on the fabric, so I decided to use that same fabric and turn each of the designs into individual loveys.

In three words, Why do you love Pittsburgh?
