Holiday season is here and it’s also the perfect time to choose gratitude and giving. This year we are finding more ways to give back creatively to our community while maintaining each other’s safety.
Here are 4 ways to safely give back:
1. Donate food or money to your local food pantries.
Covid has affected many families and individuals and taking care of their groceries makes a huge impact. Here is a directory of several Pittsburgh-area food pantries. If you are a restaurant owner, food distributor, caterer, or farm, you can donate food before it enters the waste stream through 412 Food Rescue.
2. Take care of our students.
With schools having to adjust quickly to alternative classrooms, the costs to keep our students and teachers safe has significantly increased. From school supplies, teacher’s resources, to covering a child’s basic needs, The Education Partnership meets these needs in Southwestern PA low-income schools. Learn more here.
3. Enhance your neighborhood urban forest.
Urban forests provides many health, environmental, and social benefits to the community, which is why we love Tree Pittsburgh. Trees improve the air quality, increases property value, strengthens social development, reduces crime, and offers overall support to the environment. Learn more here about how to get involved.
4. Pay it forward.
The beauty of random acts of kindness is that they spark a fire that will keep on lighting. Try carrying around an already loaded gift card to Giant Eagle or an easily accessible grocery store in your wallet. If you happen to cross paths with someone needing help with groceries, you are ready to hand them a gift. Many people who find themselves on a homeless shelter waiting list this winter will be in need of warm clothes, jackets, and sleeping bags. Keep these items in the trunk of your car in case you meet someone struggling to keep warm.
We hope this inspires creative ways to give back and encourages you to find ways to express gratitude.
